Why USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) Matters

If you own an iPhone or a Google Pixel device, USB Power Delivery, also known as USB-PD, is one of the best options available. It is an officially recognized USB standard, and many brands prefer it instead of using their own proprietary fast charging systems. As long as the charger is USB-PD certified and provides the required wattage, it should work correctly.

However, not all devices use USB-PD at the same power level. For example, the iPhone 12 Pro Max supports charging up to 22 watts, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max supports up to 27 watts. Higher wattage allows faster charging, so it is important to know your phone’s maximum supported wattage before buying a charger.

The cable also matters. A proper USB-C to USB-C cable should support at least 60 watts and meet USB-PD standards to ensure safe and efficient charging.

USB-PD can also power larger devices like laptops, with support up to 100 watts, and a 240-watt version is expected soon. If you use devices from multiple brands, a certified USB-PD charger can act as a single charging solution.

Quick Charge: What You Need to Know

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge is another widely used fast charging standard. It is commonly found in phones from Samsung, Razer, Asus, Sony, Nokia, and LG. Quick Charge can be slightly faster than standard USB-PD, but it is proprietary.

Quick Charge versions 4 and newer are compatible with USB-PD, although full charging speed may require a Quick Charge-compatible charger. Most Quick Charge devices work with standard three-amp USB-C cables.

Quick Charge 5 is capable of charging up to 50 percent of a phone’s battery in just five minutes, depending on battery size. It is also known for generating less heat compared to many other fast charging technologies.

Warp Charge: OnePlus’s Proprietary Solution

OnePlus offers Warp Charge, previously known as Dash Charge, for users who want extremely fast charging. This technology is proprietary and works only with OnePlus devices. It also requires a compatible charger and a special cable.

For example, Warp Charge can charge the OnePlus 9 Pro’s 4500mAh battery from zero to full in about 30 minutes.

OnePlus’s parent company, OPPO, uses a similar fast charging system called SuperVOOC. However, its availability outside China remains limited.

Fast Charging for Other Brands

Samsung uses Adaptive Fast Charging and Super Fast Charging for its devices. Adaptive Fast Charging supports up to 18 watts, while Super Fast Charging can reach 45 watts. Although it is based on USB-PD, achieving maximum speed requires a certified charger and cable that support five amps.

Motorola uses TurboPower, which is based on Quick Charge 3.0. Low-wattage TurboPower devices can work with any Quick Charge 3.0 charger. Higher-wattage versions require chargers that support Quick Charge 4+ or newer.

Picking the Right Charger for You
